Stories From the Field: A PlaceBase Production for the 2015 Rural Arts and Culture Summit

Artists play a vital role in community life. Not only in the realm of the arts but in business and politics – artists shape their communities from the ground up. Whether through visual art, music, sculpture, craft, or performance, artists:

• affirm and challenge our relationships with one another and with the world around us;

• collect, keep, tell and preserve our stories;

• remind us of what is most important in our traditions;

• and challenge us to imagine the best possible future.

As such, our artists are an integral part of the growth and development of our rural communities. However, many are unaware of the role of artists in public life and community health, as the impact of the arts can be a challenge to quantify – this is where you come in!

These Story Swap Workshops are an opportunity for artists to explore, analyze, and advocate for the local arts culture.

We hope to take a full account of the state of the arts in your region, map the landscape of your arts community, and evaluate together what impact local artists have had on the growth and development of your region as a whole.

We invite artists, arts and cultural organizations, city planners & leaders, business owners & members of the chamber of commerce, to explore together the role and impact of the arts in our public life.

In collaboration with the 2015 Rural Arts and Culture Summit, artists Ashley Hanson and Andrew Gaylord from PlaceBase Productions will facilitate this conversation about the state of the arts in your region. They will record the conversation and make findings available locally AND incorporate findings into a theatrical performance about the state of the arts in Minnesota at the 2015 Rural Arts and Culture Summit.
