Otter Tail County, MN – July 12, 2018 – Drop-In Auditions and Volunteer Sign Up for an original, place-based, musical theater production that will take place in Pelican Rapids, Perham, Parkers Prairie and Battle Lake in September, 2018. PlaceBase Productions is looking for 50-100 performers, musicians, artists, volunteers, singers, puppeteers, dancers, and Otter Tail County enthusiasts to be a part of the production; No experience or preparation necessary; all ages and abilities encouraged to attend; families, siblings, and friends can audition together.

In partnership with the Otter Tail County Historical Society, PlaceBase Productions is looking for Otter Tail County enthusiasts to help create an original, site-specific, walking theaterproduction that will take place September 14-16, 2018 in Pelican Rapids, Perham, Parkers Prairie and Battle Lake. Auditions and Volunteer Sign-Up will be held on Saturday, July 21 and Sunday, July 22 in four locations around Otter Tail County. (See dates / times above and attached flier). Rehearsals for the production will be held on occasional evenings and weekends from July 29-September 14, and directors will work with performers’ schedules.

This one-of-a-kind productionwill be staged in and around Otter Tail County this September. The audience will have the option of viewing the production on foot or bicycle – moving together from scene to scene in a style of mobile theater PlaceBase Productions has coined “Walking Theater.” The original musical theater production will explore the past, present, and future of Otter Tail County and celebrate the rich history, culture, and local talent of the area.

Ashley Hanson & Andrew Gaylord of PlaceBase Productions, have spent the six months researching the history, stories, legends and lore of Otter Tail County by collecting historical documentation, holding Story Swap Workshops, and conducting interviews with groups and individuals who have a deep connection to the area. The stories and information collected have informed the script and music for this original, place-based theater production.

PlaceBase Productions has successfully produced similar large-scale theater projects in the Minnesota communities of Milan, Appleton, Granite Falls, Fergus Falls, Saint Paul, Bloomington, and New London. Their productions have ranged from exploring the Minnesota River Valley through Walking, Hiking, Bird Watching and Paddling Theater on the Minnesota River, to exploring the history of mental health care through Bicycle Theater. In each production, more than 50 community members participated in the show and audiences in the hundreds came from across the region to celebrate the stories of these treasured Minnesota places. PlaceBase will produce Otter Tail County: The Musical!in partnership with the Otter Tail County Historical Society as a part of the 150thAnniversary of Otter Tail County. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Lake Region Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.  

Story Swaps-Press Release

Otter Tail County, MN – June, 2018:  PlaceBase Productions, in partnership with the Otter Tail County Historical Society, is holding a Story Swap Series in four different communities to gather stories for an original, community-based theater production that will take place in September 2018. Workshops have already been held in Perham and Battle Lake over two weekends in April. Workshops in Pelican Rapids and Parkers Prairie are coming up in June. The stories collected at these events will help inform the script for the large-scale, site-specific, musical theater production that will be performed by members of each community. Story Swaps are free, open to all ages, and include lunch and beverages. No RSVP required – just show up with a willingness to listen and share!

Facilitated by Ashley Hanson & Andrew Gaylord of PlaceBase Productions, Story Swaps are a place to share in story, history, and memories of your town – whether you have lived in Otter Tail County your entire life or are new to the community, if you are an amateur historian, storyteller, artist, community enthusiast, or you just love Otter Tail County and want to talk about it, we want to hear your stories! Or maybe you want to learn a bit more about the upcoming theater production or just want to listen to the other stories being shared – everyone is welcome!

The stories collected will inform the script and music for an original musical that will be performed in Pelican Rapids, Perham, Parkers Prairie and Battle Lake this September to celebrate 150 Years of Otter Tail County – highlighting the rich history, culture, and local talent of the area by turning Otter Tail County into a stage! Open auditions for this “one of a kind” production will be held in July 2018.
